The mass media are in a death spiral, as fragmented audiences deprive them of their very critical mass. The advertising that has had a symbiotic relationship with mass media for almost 400 years is not only losing its host, but is subject to existential threats of its own: ad avoidance and inventory glut. Thus, whether we like it or not, we are headed for a post-advertising age. Media and marketing thus find themselves in the same boat as every institution that has hitherto dictated to the group formerly known as the audience...or the electorate, or the congregation, or the customer base. Now they -- i.e, we -- are genuine stakeholders, using the same digital tools that have so devastated the status quo to coalesce individuals into an aggregated force to be reckoned with. |

Even as recently as a year ago major media companies were questioning the viability of serving up content over the internet. Given the migration of advertising dollars to the internet, and given the enormous popularity of peer to peer content sharing over media like You Tube, they've been forced to rethink their position: the question is no longer one IF, but one of HOW. What models work for digital content deliver? Subscription all you can eat? Embedded advertising? Pay per minute? Download to own? This panel will talk about what they've learned about monetizing their content. |
