Dictionary

Scheduling systems are used by organizations to allocate and manage their various resources adequately. These types of software are used to manage both internal and external activity planning such as book events, schedule employees, reserve rooms, coordinate the daily activities, and calendar.

Under digital media rights, program scheduling systems are used to allocate time and activities to different media shows hosted on a media platform.

Media companies use the program scheduling system to improve their reach, build the audience for a new show, retain the audience, and compete with other media companies. They are also used to deliver shows to audiences when they are most likely to want to watch them and to deliver audiences to advertisers in a manner that makes their advertising more effective. This approach is referred to as linear broadcasting.

Program scheduling systems were created to combat the problems faced with the use of manual scheduling, which proved quite ineffective and uncoordinated.  There are various types of program scheduling techniques used such as bridging, block programming, cross programming or day-parting.
